Sites of Fermentation: Migrations in the Microbiome of an Elk (2016)
Digital collage, inkjet print
96” x 24”
As they migrate in search of food, ruminants (like elk) ingest flora which is held in their multi-chambered stomachs for microbial fermentation before being digested. Stitched together from archival veterinary and medical illustrations, this drawing collapses terrestrial and microbial migrations into a single landscape.
