Herniated Fleshy Fruit

Herniated Fleshy Fruit (2026)
Created at the European Ceramic Workcentre EKWC in collaboration with the TextielLab/TextielMuseum, Netherlands
Slip-cast ceramic stoneware, cast in felted wool textile molds
Variable dimensions

Felted molds spring unpredictable leaks when filled with clay slip. I plug them with objects from the studio — pens, sponges, and paint brushes — leaving pockmarks and craters on the fleshy fruit body. After draining, the mold is mended and reused. Stretchy material is sewn in to replace large holes, resulting in smooth herniated protrusions, suggesting the onset of disease. As the mold degrades, every stitch and scar is made visible on the cast surface.

The creation of this work was made possible thanks to the financial support of the TextielLab/TextielMuseum, European Ceramic Workcentre, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and Canada Council for the Arts.
